Avatar: The Last Airbender, in case you don’t know, is a neo-anime made by Americans. It’s series finale aired last weekend and it totally rocked. The show has a knack for knowing when to be serious and when to be silly, much like One Piece (Japanese version, as the USA one is garbage thanks to editing). My thoughts on the ending are going to be pretty spoiler heavy so instead of having a big pink blob of spoiler text I’m just going to put it after the jump.
Avatar is probably the best American made animated series at the moment. I really liked the interaction between Zuko and Iro when they meet again for the first time since their bigg falling out. It was so good to see Iro being father-like again, which is something I’ve always loved about their relationship. Having Zuko appreciate him for once made it that much better.
During the three way fight between Katara, Zuko, and Azula I was hoping that Zuko would be able to take out Azula in a 1 on 1 fight. I thought that this would help show that his transformation made him even more powerful than when he was relying on his anger for strength. It was good to see that he could stand up to her and hold his own, and I think that came across pretty well during the fight. His single hadned victory wasnt in the cards, however as Azula attacked Katara and in order to protect her Zuko was injured. It was cool how through intelligence and not brute force, Katara was able to best Azula. I kind of wish she was able to bloodbend during the fight, which would have completely removed Azula’s “I’m better than you” state of mind and finished her decent into complete madness.
The final fight between Aang and the Phoenix King was one of the coolest fights i’ve seen. When Aang had his avatar-state activated by the scar on his back it got pretty nuts. I like that despite all the past Avatar’s advice he was able to find a way to defeat the Phoenix King non-lethally. Plus, for him having his power to bend removed was probably worse than death for him anyway.
Avatar is awesome. Book closed.
