Playstation 3 Firmware 2.60 – Photogasm

Today on The Playstation Blog Eric Lempel spills the beans on the imminent release of firmware 2.60 for the Playstation 3.

In this update they add a few notable features:

  • support for DivX 3.11
  • Guest access to the Playstation Store which lets people without a PSN account browse the store.

Also added is a new Photo Gallery application which looks pretty rad. Check out the walkthrough video.

GC 2008 – Playstation Announcements

Sony had their press conference today in Leipzig, Germany. They announced some pretty cool stuff that will be making its way stateside this year.

First, they announced a new 160GB PS3 bundle that comes with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. It will have the same functionality as the new 80GB one, which means no backward compatibility.

They announced a new revision to the PSP hardware, the PSP-3000 includes a new LCD screen, and a built in microphone for use with Skype. The entertainment packs will stay at $199, while a stand alone PSP will still be $169.

Finally, Sony announced a bluetooth keyboard (pictured above) that will snap onto Sixaxis or Dualshock3 controllers. I guess it even has a mode that turns the main key area into a sort of laptop style touchpad. I dont know how that will work but sounds pretty cool. It also has buttons that will jump straight to your friends list and message box on the XMB.

PlayOn! could be awesome.

On gizmodo today they posted a link to this program called PlayOn. What it does is allows you to stream youtube, hulu, netflix (soon) and other channels programming to the PS3. I just tested it out and it seemed to work just great. Even for HD content. The picture quality isn’t pristeen but for streaming its pretty decent.

PlayOn is in beta (read: free) and the trial period is 60 days after which you’ll be able to purchase it for $30. Which I am considering, depending on how well netflix’s works on it. I hope netflix ramps up the number of their streaming movies as well.

Unfortunately, the program only runs on PC for now.

Left4Dead Shambles to the PS3!

In the latest issue of the Official Playstation Magazine it states that Valve’s Co-Op survival game Left4Dead will be making its way to the PS3. The catch? EA is going to be porting the game over to the PS3 much like they did for The Orange Box. Hopefully this port won’t suffer from the same frame-rate issues as we saw in their last attempt to bring a Valve game PS3-ward.

Now if only Valve, and more specifically Gabe Newell, would drop the whole “we hate PS3” thing so that this porting issue wouldn’t be… an issue.

Positive news either way. Also, a good excuse to have Neil Diamond looking silly on the blog.

Call of Duty 4

On Saturday I went to gamestop to trade in some games, and I wanted a good first person shooter to play. I ended up picking up COD4: Game of the Year Edition. I played the single player for awhile on Sat, and the multiplayer that night and on Sunday. I am really enjoying the game so far. The multiplayer is really fantastic. I love the way that you unlock new weapon attachments, camo, perks, sights, and weapons, (primary, sidearm, and support). I am like level 12 right now I think, and I’m using an m16 with a red dot sight (which is a major improvement over the sight the gun comes with).

Trophies on PS3

Super Stardust HD

Last night I bought Super Stardust HD off of PSN. It is (I believe) the only game that has already been patched to include trophy support. I beat the first 2 worlds and ended up getting 3 trophies for it. The game itself is really cool, and much more fun than the demo suggests. I think once trophies catch on playing games on the PS3 will be much more attractive to people who are currently “Achievement Whores” on Xbox Live.

2.40 Train Wreck

After the update hit last night at around 10:30 CT reports of bricked systems began to trickle in. The symptom is that after the install the PS3 starts and hangs on the ribbon without progressing to the XMB. To me it sounds like the install fails for whatever reason and you’re left without a functioning file system so the PS3 sits there and waits for one to appear. The solution that people have found is if you pull out the PS3 Hard Disk and format it on a computer then put it back into the PS3, and reformat it. This of course will get rid of all your save files and DLC.

Luckily my 2.40 PS3 is working fine.

Playstation 3 Firmware 2.40 is live!

go download it right now! Trophies, in game XMB, and in game system music are yours for the having!

Well, I downloaded it and it works and everything. Unfortunately none of the games I own support trophies yet. Burnout Paradise is said to be adding them retroactively at some point, but not yet. If you’ve got Super Stardust HD that is already patched but its not retroactive, so go start earning. Here is a list of games that are slated to have trophy support:

  • BUZZ! Quiz TV
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • MotorStorm Pacific Rift
  • NBA 09 – PS3
  • PAIN
  • PixelJunk Eden
  • Resistance 2
  • SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
  • Warhawk

I imagine that this list will keep growing as more games get closer to release, and already released games get patched.
